We went into hospital for our 2 weeks over time checkup. The tests showed that Elsa had lost weight and they saw alarming dips in her heart rate during the weak contractions Lisa was having. Due to this they decided to go for an emergency C-section which happened pretty much right away. The staff were great the whole time and kept us well informed and calm.
I was at Lisa's head during the C-section which was so fast that I didn't realise they had taken Elsa out. She didn't make the transition from water to air very well and wasn't breathing at first. The medical team put her on oxygen right away, cleared some water from her throat and started monitoring her heart rate and breathing. Her breathing started up quickly but was too fast and shallow. During this time I was with her and could stroke, touch and talk to her all the time. I was reassured by her strong grip and she seemed to be calmed by my voice. Lisa was being stitched up and then wheeled off to recover from her operation during this time and didn't properly see Elsa for 5h.
I did cut the cord but it was a bit pointless as it had already been cut during the operation, then I cut it and then the Doc's cut it even shorter as they put some more lines into her through her cord stump. Through these they gave Elsa blood and glucose and she continued improving.
Some 5h after the birth Lisa returned to the ward and could be wheeled down to visit Elsa in neonatal (special care ward). A little after that Elsa was doing so well that she was taken off the oxygen and was breathing all by herself. I could give her her first feed through a little cup with a spout as well as the glucose.
All in all she was in the neonatal ward for 2 days before being passed fit. All the staff were excellent which may be why we aren't too traumatised. After that we were moved to the BB (normal) ward where Lisa and her could be together and start breast feeding. 2 days later we came home as a family.
